Author workshop
Presented by John Colligon (editor of Vacuum) and Jan Willem Wijnen (Executive Publisher Elsevier)
Researchers advance science by doing experiments, measurements and calculations and interpreting the results. But the next essential step is to write down the results and conclusions in a scientific paper and publish those in a scientific journal.
John Colligon (editor of Vacuum) and Jan Willem Wijnen (Executive Publisher Elsevier) will present a workshop on how to get published. The workshop will explain the fundamental components and guidelines that authors should adhere to in preparing manuscripts and submitting them to scientific journals for publication. The workshop will cover each step of the submission, review and revision processes and attendees will hear the Do's and Don’ts of getting published. Also the complete publishing process will be described and the way scientific journals are organized.
The workshop is aimed at new authors, but also at more experienced authors who want to hear how to bypass common publishing hurdles or discuss specific problems with the editor and publisher.
A special highlight
A special highlight will be the presentation of the Rudolf Jaeckel - Prize of the German Vacuum Society DVG to Prof. Dr. Karl Leo from the Technical University of Dresden, and his Laureate Lecture entitled “Organics: Lousy semiconductors for wonderful applications”. Prof. Leo and his team received recently also the Future Prize 2011 of the President of the Federal Republic of Germany for their path breaking research on Organic Light Emitting Diodes and Organic Solar Cells.

JOHN S COLLIGON
A Special Guest of Honour at the JVC-14/EVC-12/AMDVG-11/CroSloVM-19 Conference
It is a great pleasure to announce that JOHN S COLLIGON, BEng, PhD,FIEE, CEng., FInstP, CPhys, Founder and series Chair of the European Vacuum Conference will be a special Guest of Honour of the JVC-14/EVC-12/AMDVG-11/CroSloVM-19 conference, June 4-8, 2012, Dubrovnik, Croatia.
John Colligon is a Research Professor in the Dalton Research Institute at Manchester Metropolitan University and is currently Head of the Surface Coatings and Characterisation Group in the MMU Centre for Materials Science Research.
He set up and chaired the first European Vacuum Conference in Salford 1988 and this has now become a regular event run by the IUVSTA Vacuum Science Division. This conference has been well supported by delegates over the years. A photograph taken at the Exhibition is shown in the figure below:

John Colligon, John Coburn and Ian Owen at EVC-1 1988
His principal area of study is related to ion-surface interactions applied to both the modification of surfaces of materials and to surface analysis. In 1998 he was made a Fellow of the American Vacuum Society with the citation: “for pioneering studies of energy-assisted deposition of thin films and controlled surface modification by dynamic recoil mixing and for applications to novel materials”. This specific area has been his major area of study over recent years with particular emphasis on hard thin film coatings and, more recently, MAX phases. The work has been published in over one hundred articles in refereed journals and presented as a similar number of conference papers.
John has been associated with IUVSTA since 1986 when he was their Recording Secretary. He then became Secretary General of IUVSTA for the 3 triennia from 1989-98. More recently he was Chair of their Thin Film Division from 2007-2010. He is now on the TFD committee as Past-Chair.
John is also known as Editor of the journal VACUUM. He took on this position in 1981 when the journal had only enough submitted papers for the first 2 issues. With the help of colleagues he managed to expand the scope and international nature of the publication and sustain it for the next 30 years. He stepped down as main editor in December 2011 but remains as Reviews and Special Issues Editor for the journal. In this capacity he will continue to be connected with the JVC-14/EVC-12/AMDVG-11/CroSloVM-19 conference longer than most - at least until publication of the Conference Proceedings.
